What’s a’brewin’ at Blue Ridge

“when I was at home, I was in a better place”

~Touchstone, Shakespeare’s As You Like It

Fortunately for me, then, Blue Ridge is my home —  I truly am in a better place.

Here at Blue Ridge CTC, I coordinate the Developmental Writing and English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs, and I act as the Content Area Specialist for art and foreign languages (Spanish and sign language).

As an instructor in the School of Liberal Arts and Transitional Studies (LATS), I advise Liberal Arts AA degree-seeking students and teach ACFN010, CGEN100, CGEN101, ENGL100, and ENGL199.

I am also the Director of the Writing Center and a certified ESL tutor and tutor trainer.

I feel fortunate to serve as the advisor to the Blue Ridge Residential Writers Group, the faculty representative to the Student Government Association (SGA), and a College representative to the state-wide Advisory Council of Faculty

In addition, I serve on the Cultural Events Committee, the Faculty Development Committee, and the Liberal Arts Advisory Council.  Two projects with which I am currently involved are the development of accelerated/condensed courses and a collaborative effort with Adult Based Education (ABE) to offer additional levels of developmental coursework.

Lifelong learning is my passion and goal.  I completed my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Education at Shepherd College and am currently at work on a Master of Arts in Special Education. I have studied at Bryn Mawr College, Delaware Valley College, Hagerstown Community College, Shepherd College, West Virginia University, and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.

Being the best teacher and learner I can be is of utmost importance to me.  I am a huge fan of David Gottshall, founder of the Great Teachers Movement, and I am oh-so-thankful to have attended Great Teacher Seminars in three states. Every day, I am thankful for my life – for the opportunity to do what I love each and every day.

I have lived in West Virginia for nearly fifteen years, and I am a true convert.  I love these mountains.  I live in a tiny little house on the main street in Shepherdstown along with my eleven-year-old daughter, Tori, and our menagerie:  Daphne, Mango, Hermie, Crabbie, and Paddy (one dog, one cat, three hermit crabs).

Tori is the light of my life, and she and my partner, Kathy Jo, fill my days with love and laughter.  We are talkers and readers, cooks and eaters.  Our favorite evening is one spent on the deck playing a game – or in the living room watching some hideous reality show.
