The Reinvention of Laura Kretzer

PC Repair

What a great class!!! I had so much fun tearing computers apart and putting them back together.

Normally in a class like this, you may have one or two labs where the teacher will deliberately "break" a computer and ask you to figure out what is wrong and fix it. However, there were so many of the lab computers that were not working that the teacher asked permission to have a lab for half of each class so that we could get as many computers as possible working. We first had to determine which ones were operable. Then we took them all completely apart, test each component marking them as "good" or "bad", rebuild as many as we could with the good parts and documenting everything along the way.

When we started, there were four usable computers. When we were finished there were 16.

Operating Systems

From the title of this class, I assumed that we would be learning to navigate and deal with various operating systems like Linux and Unix. However, you know what happens when you assume. In actuality, we dealt only with Windows operating systems and how to use the tools and command prompt utilities to check and debug a system.

Though not what I was expecting, it was definitely worth while, and went hand in hand with what we were learning in PC Repair, so the two classes reinforced each other.
